Choosing a Basin Cabinet

Two things decide whether a basin cabinet works: whether it fits the plumbing that is already there, and whether it survives the humidity.

Basin Cabinet Size, Mounting and Plumbing

Measure the wall run first, then the depth. Depth is what people forget. A basin cabinet that fits the wall can still block a door swing or make a narrow bathroom hard to walk past. Measure from the wall to the front edge, not just left to right.

Wall-hung or floor-standing. A wall-hung cabinet leaves the floor clear, which makes a small bathroom read as larger and makes mopping easier. It needs a wall that can carry the load, so a false wall needs proper support behind the tile. A floor-standing unit is more forgiving and hides an uneven floor edge.

Find the waste outlet before you commit. The trap has to sit inside the cabinet, and where your existing waste comes out of the wall or floor decides which cabinets can actually take it. Moving a waste outlet after tiling means breaking the floor.

Decide the basin at the same time. A counter-top basin sits on the cabinet and adds height; an integrated or under-counter basin keeps the top flush. See the basin range and choose the pair together, not one after the other.

What Survives a Malaysian Bathroom

A basin cabinet lives in constant humidity and gets splashed every day. That is a harder job than any other piece of furniture in the house, and it is where cheap units fail.

Ask what the carcass is made of, not what the door looks like. The failure starts at the bottom edge and the back panel, where water sits and wicks in. A swollen bottom edge is not repairable.

Check the hinges and runners. Soft-close hardware is not just comfort: a door that slams is a door that loosens its fixings over a few years. In a wet room the hardware is usually what goes first.

Match the finish to the tap. Handles and the tap are read together, so pick them as a set. Our bathroom taps and mixers are in the same place.

Leave the mirror until last. A mirror cabinet above the basin has to clear the tap arc and the cabinet width, so choose it once the vanity is fixed. The rest of the bathroom furniture range is worth a look at the same time.

Common questions

What size basin cabinet should I buy?

Start from the clear wall run and subtract enough at each end that the doors open without hitting a wall or a door frame. Then check the depth against the walking space. In most Malaysian apartment bathrooms depth is the binding constraint, not width.

Wall-hung or floor-standing?

Wall-hung leaves the floor clear, which suits small bathrooms and makes cleaning easier, but it needs a wall that can carry the weight. Floor-standing is more forgiving, hides an uneven floor line, and does not depend on what is behind the tile.

Does the basin come with the cabinet?

It depends on the model. Some are sold as a set with the basin and some are the cabinet only. Check the listing, and if you are matching an existing basin bring its dimensions, because the cut-out and the tap hole position have to line up.

Will a vanity cabinet last in a wet bathroom?

It depends almost entirely on the carcass material and the hardware, not the door finish. Ask what the body and the back panel are made of, look for soft-close hinges, and keep the bottom edge off standing water. Ventilation matters more than any coating.

Can I fit one myself?

A floor-standing unit usually yes. A wall-hung one is a different job: the fixings carry the cabinet, the basin and the water in it, so what is behind the tile decides the fixing, and getting that wrong is how a vanity comes off the wall.
