Basin Tap

Basin Taps: Cold, Mixer, Tall and Wall-Mounted

A basin tap is the tap you touch most in a day, so it is worth getting the height and the reach right rather than buying on looks. This category holds basin cold taps, tall basin taps for counter-top bowls, wall-mounted basin taps, basin mixer taps for a hot feed, and a few self-closing and elbow-action taps for clinics and public washrooms. Start from the basin you have, because the basin decides which of these will work.

Choosing a Basin Tap That Fits the Basin

The basin decides the basin tap: a counter-top bowl needs a tall tap, an inset basin needs a standard one, and a wall-mounted tap needs its pipe in the wall before the tiler comes.

Matching the Basin Tap to the Basin

Height and reach come first. The spout should land near the centre of the bowl. A standard basin tap on a counter-top bowl is too short, so you wash your hands against the back of the bowl. A tall basin tap on a shallow inset basin is too high, so water splashes out onto the counter. Measure the bowl height from the counter before choosing. The basin category shows the main types.

Count the tap holes. A basin with one hole takes a single-hole tap. A basin with no hole is meant for a wall-mounted tap, and a basin with three holes is meant for a two-handle set. A tap that does not match the hole pattern needs a cover plate at best and a different basin at worst.

Cold tap or mixer. Most basins in Malaysia run cold only, and a basin cold tap is the right answer for them. A basin mixer tap makes sense only where a storage or multipoint heater feeds hot water to the basin. If that is your plan, the mixer taps category covers the basin, shower and kitchen versions.

Wall-mounted looks clean and costs more to change. A wall-mounted basin tap frees the counter and suits a basin cabinet with a slim top, but its outlet is set into the wall at first fix. Get the height right the first time: high enough to clear the bowl, low enough not to splash.

Fitting, Pressure and Upkeep

Use braided stainless hoses and a shut-off. The hose under the basin is the part that fails, not the tap. A stainless steel braided hose lasts; a plain rubber one hardens in the heat and cracks.

Fit an angle valve under every basin. It is a small brass valve on the wall outlet that lets you isolate the basin tap alone. Without it, a dripping tap means shutting off the whole bathroom. See angle valves and stop valves.

Weak flow is usually the aerator. In hard-water areas the mesh at the spout tip scales up within months. Choose a tap with a removable aerator, unscrew it and soak it in vinegar rather than replacing the tap.

Self-closing and elbow-action taps are for clinics, public toilets and food premises, where a tap left running or touched with dirty hands is the problem being solved. They are not a home choice unless you want that behaviour.

Match the finish to the rest of the room. The basin tap is the reference finish the eye reads first, so the shower and the bathroom accessories should follow it. Buy the set at once rather than piece by piece.

Common questions

What is a basin tap?

A basin tap is the tap fitted at the wash basin, either standing on the basin or counter through a tap hole, or coming out of the wall above the bowl. Cold-only versions have one handle and one feed. Mixer versions blend hot and cold from two feeds through one handle.

How do I choose a tall basin tap?

Use a tall basin tap when the basin is a bowl sitting on top of the counter. Measure from the counter to the rim of the bowl, and pick a tap whose spout sits comfortably above that rim and reaches to about the centre of the bowl. Too much height splashes; too little leaves no room for your hands.

Basin cold tap or basin mixer tap?

A basin cold tap if there is no hot water feed at the basin, which is the usual case in Malaysian homes. A basin mixer tap only if a heater supplies hot water to that point. Check the plumbing before buying the mixer, not after.

Can I fit a wall-mounted basin tap after the wall is tiled?

Only by opening the wall, because the outlet has to be set into it at the right height and depth. If the bathroom is already finished, choose a deck-mounted basin tap that stands on the basin or counter instead.

Why does my basin tap flow weakly?

Almost always scale in the aerator at the spout tip, especially in hard-water areas. Unscrew it, soak it in vinegar, rinse and refit. If the flow is still weak, check that the angle valve under the basin is fully open and that the hose is not kinked.

Which finish is best for a basin tap?

Chrome over brass is the safest choice for humidity and daily cleaning. Matt black, gunmetal and gold finishes look good and last when applied properly over a brass or stainless body. Whatever the finish, use a soft cloth and a mild cleaner, never a scouring pad.

Bring the basin's model or a photo of the bowl to the showroom and we can check the tap height and hole pattern against it.
