Rain shower head
Rain Shower Heads: Round and Square
A rain shower head is the wide, flat head fixed overhead that drops water straight down instead of spraying it at you. This category holds round and square heads in the common sizes, in ABS, stainless steel and brass, in chrome and coloured finishes, along with exposed shower sets that include one. Size is the first thing people look at and the last thing that should decide it, because a rain shower head is only as good as the pressure behind it.

Buying guide
Choosing a Rain Shower Head for Malaysian Water Pressure
A rain shower head is only as good as the pressure behind it, so decide the supply before the size.
Rain Shower Head Size, Shape and Material
Bigger needs more pressure. An eight-inch head gives a good rain on an ordinary supply. Ten inches and above cover more of you but spread the same water thinner, so on a weak supply they feel like drizzle. Choose the size the pressure can fill, not the size that photographs best.
Round or square. Purely a matter of matching: round head with a round shower arm and a round mixer plate, square with square. Mixing the two reads as an accident.
ABS, stainless or brass. ABS heads are light, chrome-plated and cheap to replace; they suit most homes. Thin stainless steel heads are light and hold their finish well. Brass heads are heavy and solid, and need a solid arm and a firm elbow in the wall to carry them.
Rubber nozzles are worth insisting on. In hard-water areas the nozzles scale up within months. Silicone nozzles rub clean with a thumb; fixed metal nozzles do not, and the head goes patchy and stays that way.
Pressure, Heater and Position
Test the pressure before buying. A condo on a pumped supply will run most heads. A landed house fed by gravity from a roof tank may not on the upper floor, where the tank is only a metre or two above the head. Run the existing shower tap into a bucket and time it; a slow fill means a small head or a booster pump.
Hot rain needs a storage heater and a mixer. An instant heater cannot push enough hot water through a large head. The hot rain shower people picture runs from a storage or multipoint heater through a mixer tap, often a concealed one with a diverter to a hand shower. Cold rain from a bib tap and an arm is the simple alternative.
Position it over the standing spot. The head should sit above where you stand, not against the wall, which is a question of arm length. Set the outlet high enough that the finished head clears the tallest user.
Keep a hand shower alongside. A rain head does not rinse the floor or wash a child. Most full bathrooms pair the overhead with a hand shower on the same mixer, or choose an exposed shower set that carries both.
Screen the wet zone. A rain head drops a lot of water straight down, and without a glass screen or a curb it spreads across the whole floor. Plan the floor fall toward the trap at the same time.
Common questions
What is a rain shower head?
A rain shower head is a wide, flat shower head fixed overhead on an arm, designed to drop water straight down over the whole body rather than spray it from the side. It is fed from a wall or ceiling outlet, either through a cold tap or through a mixer with hot water.
What size rain shower head should I get?
The size the pressure can fill. Eight inches suits an ordinary supply and most condos. Ten inches and above want a pumped supply or a booster. On an upper floor fed by gravity from a roof tank, start small; a large head there feels like drizzle.
Does a rain shower head work with a water heater?
With a storage or multipoint heater through a mixer, yes. With an instant heater, not well: the heater limits the flow and a large head turns it into a lukewarm trickle. If you have an instant heater and want a rain shower, the practical route is a cold rain head from a bib tap and the heater's own hand shower for warm water.
Why is my rain shower head weak?
Either the pressure at the outlet is low, which is common on gravity-fed upper floors, or the nozzles are scaled. Rub the nozzles or soak the head in vinegar first. If it is still weak, the supply needs a pump, and no head will fix that.
Round or square rain shower head?
Whichever matches the shower arm and the mixer plate. Round is easier to match across brands; square is the more architectural look. Either way keep the arm, head and any hand shower in the same shape and finish.
How do I clean a rain shower head?
Rub silicone nozzles with a thumb to loosen the scale, or unscrew the head and soak it face-down in white vinegar for an hour, then rinse. Do it as soon as the spray goes uneven rather than waiting for nozzles to block.
Tell us whether the shower point is on a pumped or gravity supply and what heater it has, and we can suggest a head size that will run properly on it.
