Mirror Cabinet

Mirror Cabinet: Storage Behind the Glass

A mirror cabinet does two jobs on one wall: it is the mirror over the basin and the cupboard that clears the counter of bottles. That makes it the most useful piece of furniture in a small bathroom, and the piece most likely to fail if the body is the wrong material. This category holds single and multi-door mirror cabinets in metal bodies and a range of finishes. Check the body, the hinges and the depth against your tap before the colour.

Choosing a Mirror Cabinet for a Humid Bathroom

A mirror cabinet lives in steam every day, so the body material and the hinges decide whether it still opens cleanly in five years.

Body Material, Doors and What Goes Inside a Mirror Cabinet

Metal body, not board. An aluminium or stainless steel body does not swell, warp or grow mould in a humid bathroom. A board body with a laminate skin looks the same on day one and fails at the cut edges once steam gets in.

Hinges are the weak point. Ask for stainless soft-close hinges. A plated hinge rusts and then seizes, and the door is the part you touch every day.

One door or several. A single door suits a narrow basin; two or three doors suit a wide cabinet and let one person open a door without blocking the other basin. A mirror on the inside of the door is a small thing that makes it far more useful.

Shelves that move. Adjustable shelves fit tall bottles on one side and small jars on the other. Compare with a plain bathroom mirror if you have a basin cabinet below and do not need the storage.

Size, Depth and Fitting

Width follows the basin or the cabinet below. A mirror cabinet the same width as the basin cabinet reads as one unit; one wider than the cabinet looks top-heavy.

Depth against the tap. The doors must open past the basin tap. Check the cabinet's depth and its bottom height against the tap chosen from the basin taps, especially a tall counter-standing tap.

Fix it into the wall, not into the tiles. A full cabinet is heavy. Bolts into brick or concrete, or into a backing plate in a hollow wall, through the tile face with a tile bit and no hammer action.

Light and power. If you want the cabinet lit, look at the LED mirrors and plan the power point behind it before tiling. Position the cabinet on the dry wall over the basin, out of the shower spray, like the rest of the bathroom furniture.

Common questions

What is a mirror cabinet?

A shallow wall cabinet whose doors are mirrors, hung over the basin. It replaces the plain mirror and gives storage for toiletries behind the glass, which is why it is the usual choice in a small bathroom with no counter space.

Which mirror cabinet material is best in Malaysia?

Aluminium or stainless steel. Both stand up to daily steam without swelling or mould, and a stainless hinge keeps working. Board cabinets suit a dry powder room but not a wet bathroom.

What size mirror cabinet do I need?

Match the width to the basin cabinet or the basin below, and check the height so the bottom edge clears the tap. A double basin usually takes a two- or three-door cabinet so both people can open a door.

Can a mirror cabinet go directly over a basin?

Yes, that is where it belongs. The only check is that the doors swing clear of the tap and that the bottom edge is high enough not to catch a raised hand when washing.

Mirror cabinet or a plain mirror?

If the basin has a cabinet under it and the counter is clear, a plain mirror is thinner and cheaper. If bottles live on the counter or the basin is wall hung with no storage, the mirror cabinet earns its depth.

Bring the basin cabinet width and the tap model; the showroom can check that the doors clear the tap before you order.
