Double Bowl Kitchen Sinks

Double Bowl Kitchen Sink: Wash One Side, Rinse the Other

A double bowl kitchen sink splits the work: soak or wash in one bowl, rinse or drain in the other, and the tap can run without stopping the washing-up. This category holds double bowl sinks in top-mount and undermount form, in pressed and handmade stainless steel, in equal and offset bowl layouts; check which a model is before ordering. Check the base cabinet width first, because a double bowl needs a wider unit than most people expect.

Choosing a Double Bowl Kitchen Sink

A double bowl kitchen sink needs a wider cabinet than a single, so check the unit width before anything else.

What to Look For in a Double Bowl Kitchen Sink

Equal bowls or one bigger. Equal bowls suit a wash-and-rinse routine. A large-and-small split gives a wok side and a rinse side, which is how most Malaysian wet kitchens actually use it.

Width. Most double bowl sinks run 800 to 1000mm overall and want a base cabinet of 900mm or more. If the unit is 800mm or narrower, a large single bowl kitchen sink will serve you better than two cramped bowls.

Top-mount or undermount. The same rule as any kitchen sink: top-mount on laminate, undermount under stone with a fabricator to cut it.

Steel and corners. Stainless steel 304, a thicker bowl, and tight handmade corners that hold more water and clean more easily. The divider between the bowls is where scale shows first, so a satin finish is kinder than a mirror polish.

Taps, Wastes and Everyday Use

The tap has to reach both bowls. A swivel spout is the minimum; a kitchen faucet with a pull-out spray is the natural partner for a double bowl kitchen sink.

Two wastes, one trap. The waste kit joins both outlets to one trap under the cabinet. Check there is room for it, and for a dishwasher or filter connection if one is planned.

Use the second bowl. A rinse basket from the kitchen sink accessories on the second bowl turns it into a drying and thawing zone while the first bowl soaks the pot.

Keep the divider dry. Wipe the ridge between the bowls after washing up; it is the one part of the sink that never drains itself.

Common questions

What size cabinet do I need for a double bowl kitchen sink?

Usually 900mm or wider. Measure the inside of the base unit and allow about 100mm more than the sink's overall width. Bring the cabinet size and we can tell you which double bowls fit.

Are double bowl sinks better than single?

A double bowl kitchen sink is better for a wash-and-rinse routine and for keeping raw and clean separate. Worse for a wok, a roasting tray or a stock pot, which need one wide bowl. Cooking habit decides, not the sink.

Equal bowls or one bigger?

One bigger, for most Malaysian kitchens: the large bowl takes the wok and the small one rinses vegetables or drains the rack. Equal bowls suit a home that washes up in two stages every day.

Can I fit a double bowl sink undermount?

Yes, under a quartz, granite or solid surface counter, cut by a fabricator to the sink template. Under laminate, a top-mount double bowl is the safer choice.

Does a double bowl sink need two taps?

No. One tap with a swivel or pull-out spout reaches both bowls. A second small tap is only needed for a filtered water line, and that needs its own hole.

If the base cabinet is 800mm or narrower, a double bowl will not fit: look at a large single bowl instead.
