They are the usual answer for kitchen backsplashes, bathroom walls, feature walls and shop lots, because the surface stays clean and there is very little to look after. Choosing Wall Tiles

Wall tiles have an easier job than floor tiles, which is why the choice is about look and upkeep rather than wear.

Picking the Right Wall Tiles

Ceramic is the common and affordable choice for walls. Porcelain and glass mosaics cost more and give better moisture resistance and a more refined finish, which is why they turn up in wet bathrooms and in feature work.

Keep the finish honest about the room. For a clean, simple look a smooth surface is usually enough. If you want texture on the wall, pick something with surface detail, but keep it subtle or the room starts to feel busy.

Match wall tiles and floor tiles together, not one at a time. A tone that looks fine on its own can clash once everything is installed. Lay the wall tile and the floor tile side by side before you decide.

What is current: natural stone and timber looks, large formats of 600x900mm and up for fewer grout lines, bold geometric and Moroccan-inspired patterns used against neutral surfaces, 3D and relief tiles on feature walls, and quiet monochromatic matt schemes.

Keeping Wall Tiles Looking New

Regular cleaning. Wipe down with a neutral cleaner. On a kitchen backsplash, doing it while the grease is fresh is the whole job; left to build up it needs a degreaser.

Grout care is the real maintenance. The wall tiles are the durable part. Cement-based grout is porous, so it takes on stains and mould before the tile shows anything. Seal it, and keep acidic cleaners off it.

Stain prevention. Deal with splashes on a backsplash the same day. Behind a hob and around a basin are where marks set in.

Avoid harsh chemicals. Bleach and strong acids attack grout and can dull a glaze. Neutral cleaner for routine work, and keep the stronger stuff for occasional spot treatment.

Ventilation. In a Malaysian bathroom, an extractor or an openable window is what keeps mould off the grout. It does more for the look of a tiled wall than any cleaner.

Common questions

What size tiles are best for bathroom walls?

Larger formats mean fewer grout lines, which makes a small bathroom read as calmer and gives less grout to keep clean. The limit is the wall itself: a big tile needs a flat, true surface, and it produces more cuts around fittings and niches. In a tight bathroom a mid format is usually the easier result.

How do you clean bathroom wall tiles?

Neutral cleaner and warm water for routine work, then dry the wall down. Soap film and hard-water marks are what make a tiled wall look tired, and both wipe off easily while fresh. Keep bleach and acids off cement grout.

How do you clean kitchen wall tiles?

Grease is the problem, not dirt. Wipe the backsplash down while it is still warm from cooking and a neutral cleaner is enough. Once grease has set and collected dust it needs a degreaser and more effort.

How do you remove wall tiles?

It is a hacking job, not a peel-off job. The tiles come off with the adhesive bed and usually take some of the plaster or render with them, so the wall has to be made good and re-screeded before anything new goes on. Budget for that, not just for the new tile.

Is ceramic wall tile fireproof?

Ceramic is fired clay, so it does not burn and it is commonly used behind and around cooking areas. That is not the same as a fire rating for a wall assembly, which depends on the whole construction rather than the tile on the face of it.
