Bathroom Shower Heads, Arms and Sets

A bathroom shower is a system rather than a single part, and this hub holds every piece of it: rain shower heads, hand showers with their hoses and holders, wall and ceiling shower arms, exposed shower sets on a rail or post, and sliding bars. Which pieces you need depends on how the water arrives, from a cold bib tap, an instant heater, or a mixer fed by a storage heater. Settle that before choosing a single head.

Planning a Bathroom Shower That Works on Your Water Pressure

A bathroom shower is a system, not a head: the supply pressure, the tap, the arm and the head all have to agree before the tiles go on.

The Four Ways to Build a Bathroom Shower

Instant heater with its own hand shower. The most common set-up in Malaysian condos. The heater comes with a low-pressure hand shower matched to its flow, and the only decision is the holder or a sliding bar. Swapping the head for a fancier one can starve the heater, so keep to heads meant for low flow.

Cold bib tap, arm and overhead head. The simple landed-house shower: a wall tap at waist height, a shower arm above it and a rain shower head on the arm. Cold only, no heater, and everything is exposed, so any part can be changed later.

Concealed mixer with a storage heater. Hot water arrives through the wall to a concealed mixer, which feeds a rain head, a hand shower, or both through a diverter. This is the hot rain shower most people picture. It is fixed at first fix and needs the wall open.

An exposed shower set on a rail or post. The whole shower on one column: mixer body, rain head, hand shower, sometimes a bath spout. It hangs off two standard wall outlets, which makes it the fastest way to get a full shower into an existing bathroom. See the shower sets.

Pressure, Heights and the Wet Zone

Pressure decides the head. A condo on a pumped supply will run a large rain head well. A landed house fed by gravity from a roof tank often will not on the upper floor, and a big head there gives a sad trickle. Ask your plumber what the pressure is at the shower point, or run the existing tap into a bucket and time it, before you buy the head.

Heights on paper before first fix. The shower tap or mixer at about waist height, the overhead outlet high enough that the head clears the tallest person in the house with the arm's drop allowed for, and the hand shower holder at shoulder height. Tall households and low ceilings both change these numbers, so measure your own.

Separate wet from dry. Most Malaysian bathrooms are wet rooms. A glass screen or a curb keeps the spray from a rain head off the water closet and the basin, and a floor fall toward the trap keeps the water from pooling at the door.

Hose, holder and grab bar. The hose fails before the head; a stainless braided hose lasts. The holder and any grab bar fix through the tile, so mark them before the tiler comes and drill without hammer action.

Hard water and heads. Scale blocks nozzles in a few months in some areas. Rubber nozzles that rub clean, or a head that unscrews for a vinegar soak, keep the spray even without replacing the head.

Common questions

What is included in a bathroom shower?

At minimum a tap or mixer, a way to hold the head, and the head itself. A full bathroom shower usually has a rain shower head on an arm, a hand shower on a hose with a holder or sliding bar, and a mixer or tap feeding both. Exposed shower sets bundle all of these on one rail or post.

Rain shower or hand shower?

Both, if the pressure allows: the rain head for the wash and the hand shower for rinsing the floor, the children and the dog. If you must choose one, the hand shower is the more useful, and the one an instant heater already gives you. A rain head alone is a pleasure only where the pressure is good.

Does a rain shower work in a condo?

Usually yes, because condos run on a pumped supply with steady pressure. The limit is more often the heater than the pipe: an instant heater cannot push enough hot water through a large head. A storage heater with a mixer is what makes a hot rain shower work.

Where should the shower outlet be on the wall?

The overhead outlet sits high enough for the head to clear the tallest user once the arm's drop is allowed for. The tap or mixer sits at waist height where a hand can reach it before stepping under the water. Agree the numbers with the plumber before plastering; they cannot be moved afterwards.

How do I stop a rain shower spraying the whole bathroom?

A rain head throws water straight down, so most of the spray ends up on the floor beneath it. A glass screen or a raised curb around the shower zone, and a floor fall toward the trap, keep the rest of the room dry. Position the head so the falling water lands inside the zone, not on its edge.

How do I clean a shower head in hard water?

Unscrew it and soak it in white vinegar for an hour, then rinse. Rubber-nozzle heads can be rubbed with a thumb to break the scale. Do it when the spray starts to go ragged, not when it stops.

Tell us how the water arrives at the shower point, cold tap, instant heater or mixer, and we can put together the matching arm, head and hand shower in one finish.
