Choosing and Fitting Double Towel Rails

Two things decide how long double towel rails last: the metal behind the finish, and what they are fixed into.

What to Look For in Double Towel Rails

Measure the wall first. Our double towel rails come in 30, 31 and 32 inch widths. A rail that is a little too long for the run between a door and a basin is one of the most common returns, and it is the easiest thing to avoid.

Stainless steel, and ask about the fixing plate. In a wet bathroom the failure point is almost never the visible surface. It is the base metal where the flange meets the wall, which corrodes from behind long before the finish shows anything. That is how a rail that still looks perfect comes away in your hand.

Pick the finish against the tap. Chrome, gold and matt black all work, but the tap is the piece your eye reads as the reference. Buy the whole set at once: towel rings, toilet roll holders and rails in one order, one finish. Chrome from two suppliers rarely matches.

Why a double: space-efficient, easy to install, low maintenance, and it dries two towels properly instead of leaving one folded over another.

Mounting and Placement

Mark the positions before the tiler starts. The fixings go through the tile face, and you want them landing in the middle of a tile rather than on a grout line or an edge, where it is most likely to crack.

Put double towel rails on the dry side of the room, away from the shower spray. A towel that gets wet again every time somebody showers never dries, and in this climate that is how a bathroom starts to smell.

Drill slowly, hammer action off, through masking tape, with a tile bit. Hammer action on a glazed tile is how the star-shaped crack appears.

Use the right plug for what is behind the tile. Brick or concrete takes a standard plug. A false wall over a concealed cistern needs a cavity fixing rated for the load, because two wet towels weigh more than people assume.

Silicone the top edge of the wall flange so water runs off it instead of sitting behind it.

What size double towel rails do you stock?

Where should a towel rail be mounted?

On the dry side of the room, within reach of where you step out, and out of the shower spray. Height is a matter of who uses it, but a rail high enough that a full-length towel does not touch the floor is the usual rule.

Will a stainless steel rail rust in a Malaysian bathroom?

A good stainless body will not. What does corrode is a light alloy behind a plated finish, and it corrodes at the wall fixing where water wicks in behind the flange. Ask about the body and the fixing plate, not only the coating.

Can double towel rails be fitted to a plasterboard wall?

Yes, with the right fixing. A standard plug is for brick or concrete; a false wall needs a cavity fixing rated for the load. Two soaked towels on a rail is a real weight, and this is the detail most failed installations get wrong.
