Choosing a Soap Holder

The only thing that really matters in a soap holder is drainage. Soap that sits in its own water turns to slime and marks the tile under it.

Which Soap Holder Suits the Spot

A soap dish is the simplest soap holder: it sits on the basin counter or fixes to the wall beside it. It works for a bar of soap and it needs to drain, or the underside of the bar dissolves and leaves a ring on the counter.

A soap basket fixes to the wall in the shower and holds a bottle or a bar clear of the wall. This is the one for a wet area, because nothing sits in a puddle and the whole thing rinses down when you shower.

Mounting a Soap Holder and Keeping It Clean

Height and position. Fit the soap holder beside the basin, within reach of somebody standing at it. In the shower, low enough to reach sitting down if anyone in the house needs that, and out of the direct spray so the soap does not wash away while you shower.

Drill carefully. Slow speed, hammer action off, through masking tape, with a tile bit. Hammer action on a glazed tile is how the star-shaped crack appears. Use a plug suited to what is behind the tile: a standard plug in brick or concrete, a cavity fixing in a false wall.

Silicone the top edge of the wall flange so water runs off it instead of sitting behind it. That joint is where a wall fitting starts to corrode from the inside, whatever the visible finish looks like.

Cleaning. Rinse and wipe dry. Soap film is what dulls a stainless finish, and it comes off easily while it is fresh. Keep abrasive powders off it.
