Kitchen Sink

Kitchen Sink Guide: Bowls, Mounting and Steel

A kitchen sink is the hardest-working fixture in the house and the most awkward to change later, because the counter is cut around it. This category holds single and double bowl sinks, top-mount and undermount, pressed and handmade stainless steel, with some in coloured nano coatings. Decide the number of bowls, the mounting and the cabinet size before the counter is ordered. Everything else, including the kitchen faucet and the accessories, follows from that one decision.

Choosing a Kitchen Sink

A kitchen sink is chosen against the cabinet and the counter, not on its own, so measure the base unit first.

What to Look For in a Kitchen Sink

One bowl or two. A single bowl kitchen sink takes a wok, a big pot and an oven tray flat. A double bowl kitchen sink lets one side soak while the other rinses. Cooking habits decide it, not fashion.

Top-mount or undermount. A top-mount sink sits on the counter with a lip, is the easiest to fit and the easiest to replace later. An undermount sits under a stone counter, wipes clean with no lip, and needs a solid counter such as quartz or granite and a fabricator to cut it.

The steel. Stainless steel 304 resists the salt and acid of a Malaysian kitchen. Thicker bowls dent less and ring less. Handmade sinks with tight R10 corners hold more and clean easier than pressed sinks with soft rounded corners; ask about sound pads underneath.

Depth. Bowls of 200 to 230mm hide the washing-up and take a stock pot. Check what is under the cabinet: the waste, a filter and a heater all want space.

Sizes, Cabinets and Fitting

Measure the cabinet, not the counter. The sink's overall width should be about 100mm less than the inside of the base unit. A 600mm cabinet takes a sink of roughly 500mm; a double bowl usually wants 900mm or more.

Wet kitchen, dry kitchen. Many Malaysian homes cook in a wet kitchen and serve from a dry one. Put the big single bowl where the wok is, and a small bowl in the dry kitchen for glasses.

Coloured coatings. Black, gold and rose gold nano or PVD coatings look sharp and show scratches more than plain steel. Use a bottom rack if you choose one.

Order of work. The sink template goes to the counter fabricator first. Then the tap hole, in the sink or the counter, for the kitchen faucet. Then the waste kit and the kitchen sink accessories.

Common questions

What size kitchen sink do I need?

Start from the base cabinet. Measure its inside width and subtract about 100mm; that is the largest sink that fits. A 600mm cabinet takes around a 500mm sink; a 900mm cabinet takes a large single or a double bowl.

Single or double bowl kitchen sink?

Single if you cook with a wok and big pots, or if the cabinet is 800mm or narrower. Double if you wash and rinse in two stages and have the width for it. Many Malaysian homes end up with a big single in the wet kitchen and a small bowl in the dry kitchen.

Top mount or undermount kitchen sink?

Top mount if the counter is laminate or if the sink may be replaced later. Undermount if the counter is quartz, granite or solid surface and you want a clean wipe from counter into bowl. Undermount needs the fabricator to cut and polish the opening.

What is a handmade kitchen sink?

A sink folded and welded from sheet steel rather than pressed in a mould. It has tight corners, usually described as R10, a flat base, and thicker steel. It holds more for the same footprint and cleans more easily; it costs more than a pressed sink.

Do black kitchen sinks scratch?

The coating is hard, but a scratch through a black coating shows silver, which a scratch on plain steel does not. A bottom grid and a soft sponge keep it looking new. If the sink will be used hard every day, plain stainless is the safer choice.

Which stainless steel is best for a kitchen sink?

Grade 304, which holds up against the salt, vinegar and heat of daily cooking. Thickness matters as much as grade: a thicker bowl dents less and sounds less hollow under a running tap.

Order the sink before the counter: the fabricator needs the sink template in hand to cut the hole.
