Metal Shelf
Bathroom Shelf Options in Metal and Glass
A bathroom shelf gives the shower a home for shampoo and the basin a home for everything else, without a cabinet. This category holds metal-framed shelves in two forms: wire baskets that drain, and flat glass shelves held in a metal bracket. Baskets belong inside the shower where water lands; glass shelves belong by the basin or the mirror where it does not. Choose by where the shelf will sit and match the frame finish to the taps.
Buying guide
Choosing a Bathroom Shelf
A bathroom shelf in the shower must drain and a shelf by the basin must not drip, so pick the type by the spot first.
What to Look For in a Bathroom Shelf
A basket for the shower. An open wire basket lets water run straight through, so bottles never sit in a puddle. For the shower corner, a corner basket uses the space a flat shelf cannot.
A glass shelf for the dry side. Flat, easy to wipe and it does not collect soap scum in the wires. A glass shelf suits the wall above the basin or beside the mirror. Ask whether the glass is toughened and whether the front edge has a lip to stop bottles sliding off.
The frame material. The joints of a wire basket are where plated zinc goes green first. A brass or stainless steel 304 frame holds up in a Malaysian wet room; ask about the frame, not just the coating.
Finish. Match the frame to the basin tap and the towel rail, and buy them together so the finish comes from one run.
Where and How to Fit It
Positions. A shower basket at chest height on a wall that the shower head does not face, so the bottles do not get blasted off it. A glass shelf above the basin, 100 to 150mm above the tap spout, so a bottle can be lifted without hitting the mirror.
Weight. A glass shelf with full bottles is heavier than it looks. Use both flanges, screw into tile centres, and never rely on adhesive alone in a humid room.
Drilling. Masking tape, tile bit, slow speed, hammer action off. Plug to suit what is behind the tile, then silicone the top edge of each flange.
If there is no free wall, a mirror cabinet does the same job behind a door.
Common questions
Wire basket or glass shelf?
A wire basket for the shower, because it drains. A glass shelf for the basin or mirror wall, because it wipes clean and does not drip on whoever is below it. A glass shelf inside the shower fills with water and grows mould at the bracket.
Where should a bathroom shelf go?
Where the things it holds are used. Shampoo lives in the shower, so the basket goes there at chest height on a wall out of the direct spray. Toothbrushes and creams live at the basin, so the glass shelf goes above it, under or beside the mirror.
How much weight can a bathroom shelf hold?
That depends on the wall fixing more than the shelf. Two flanges screwed into solid tile and brick hold a full shelf without trouble. The same shelf on adhesive pads or on plasterboard with the wrong plug will come down with the bottles on it.
Will a metal shelf rust in the shower?
A stainless steel 304 or brass frame will not. Plated zinc alloy will, starting at the welded joints and the fixing plate. Rinse soap off the frame now and then; dried soap holds water against the metal.
Can I fit a bathroom shelf without drilling?
You can, but in Malaysian humidity adhesive pads let go. If drilling tile worries you, mark the position, use a tile bit on slow speed with hammer action off, and drill through masking tape.
Decide whether the shelf lives in the wet zone or the dry zone before you choose between basket and glass.
