What to Look For in a Robe Hook

Single hook or hook bar. A single hook goes behind the door and holds one towel or robe. A hook bar with three or five hooks suits a family bathroom where each person needs a peg. A double hook holds a towel and a robe on the same fixing without one sliding off the other.

The curve of the hook. A deep, upturned hook keeps a wet towel on. A shallow decorative hook drops a heavy bathrobe on the floor. Hang a towel on the sample in the showroom before you decide.

Body material and finish. Zinc alloy is fine in a dry position but pits where it gets sprayed; brass or stainless steel 304 is the safer body for anywhere near the shower. Match the finish to the single towel rail and towel ring so the room reads as one set.

Screw-fixed, not stuck on. Adhesive hooks let go in Malaysian humidity, usually taking a patch of paint with them. A hook fixed with two screws stays where it is put.

Where to Put It and How to Fix It

Behind the door, out of the swing. A robe hook at about 1.5 to 1.7m from the floor suits most adults; add a lower hook for children. On the door itself, check the hook clears the frame when the door closes.

Keep it out of the spray. A towel that gets wet every time someone showers never dries. Put the hook bar on the wall nearest the shower door, so the towel is within reach but stays dry.

Fixing. Mark positions before tiling if you can, so screws land in tile centres. A hook bar needs a level line first; the eye catches a 5mm slope across five hooks. Drill through masking tape on slow speed with hammer action off, then plug and screw.
