Brick and Stone Veneer

Brick Veneer and Stone Veneer for Feature Walls

Brick veneer is a thin brick face fixed to an existing wall with adhesive, giving the look of a brick or stone wall without building one. This category holds brick and stone veneer ranges in several profiles and colours, grout colour options for some ranges, a protective stone care coat, and breeze blocks for screens and vents. It suits a living room feature wall, a car porch, a gate pillar or a cafe front. Choose the profile at the showroom in daylight.

Choosing and Fixing Brick Veneer and Stone Veneer

Brick veneer is judged by how it is fixed and grouted, not by the piece alone, so plan the wall, the adhesive and the sealer together.

What to Look For in Brick Veneer and Stone Veneer

Brick or stone profile. Brick slips lay in a regular bond with visible grout lines and suit interiors, cafe fronts and TV walls. Stone veneer in a ledge or rubble pattern reads as a solid wall and suits exteriors, gate pillars and porch columns. Look at the sample board in daylight, not under shop lights.

Grout colour. The grout is a third of what you see. A pale grout on a dark brick gives a grid; a matching grout makes the wall read as one surface. Choose the grout with the brick, not after it, and where a range offers grout options, pick them together.

Interior or exterior. Both work in Malaysia, but rain, UV and mould are the exterior's enemies. A sealer stops the face soaking up water, which is what mould grows on. Interior walls can go unsealed, except behind a kitchen counter.

Quantity. Veneer is ordered by wall area plus corner pieces. Count the outside corners, add around 10 percent for cutting, and check the breeze block sizes if a vent panel is part of the same wall.

Fixing, Grouting and Sealing

The substrate. A plastered brick or concrete wall, clean and flat, is ideal. Plasterboard needs a cement board over it first. A painted wall must be scraped or keyed so the adhesive bites.

Adhesive. Use a cement-based tile adhesive suited to the weight of the piece; the sealants and adhesives category lists the types. Butter the back of each piece, press it on, and start from the corners and the bottom row so the cut pieces land where they are least seen.

Grouting. Pipe the grout into the joints with a bag rather than spreading it over the face, because a textured face is very hard to clean. For a dry-stack look, butt the pieces tight and skip the grout.

Sealing. Seal after the adhesive and grout have cured, usually a week. Re-seal an exterior wall every few years. For a wall that gets wet daily, such as a shower, wall tiles remain the better choice; the wider tile range covers those.

Common questions

What is brick veneer?

A thin slice of brick, or a cast piece made to look like one, fixed to an existing wall with adhesive. It gives the appearance of a brick wall at a fraction of the thickness and weight, with no foundation or structural work.

Is brick veneer the same as brick tiles?

In everyday Malaysian usage, yes. Brick tiles, brick slips, thin brick and brick veneer all describe the same thin facing pieces. Stone veneer is the same idea in a stone profile.

Can brick veneer be used outdoors in Malaysia?

Yes, on a porch wall, gate pillar or facade, with an exterior-grade adhesive and a sealer over the finished face. The sealer is what keeps rain out of the piece and mould off a shaded wall. Re-seal every few years.

Can I fix stone veneer to a plasterboard wall?

Only over a cement board fixed to the studs first. Plasterboard on its own softens in humidity and cannot carry the weight or hold the adhesive. On a solid plastered wall, no board is needed.

Does brick veneer need to be sealed?

Outdoors, yes. Indoors it is optional on a dry wall, and worth doing behind a kitchen counter or anywhere that gets splashed, because a sealed face wipes clean and an unsealed one absorbs the stain.

How much brick veneer do I need?

Measure the wall area in square metres, subtract doors and windows, and add about 10 percent for cuts. Count the outside corners separately, because corner pieces are ordered by length, not area. Bring the wall sizes and we can work it out with you.

Look at the sample board in daylight before deciding: colour and texture read very differently from a phone photo.
