LED Mirror

LED Mirror and LED Mirror Cabinet Basics

An LED mirror puts the light where a bathroom needs it, on the face rather than on the ceiling, which is why it is now the usual choice over the basin. This category holds lit mirrors and a lit mirror cabinet with storage behind the glass. The decision that matters is not the shape but the wiring: an LED mirror needs a power point behind it, so the electrician is involved before the tiler, not after.

Choosing an LED Mirror for the Bathroom

An LED mirror needs a power point behind it, so decide on it before the wall is closed, not when the room is finished.

What to Decide Before Buying an LED Mirror

Light colour. Warm white flatters skin and suits an evening bathroom; cool or daylight white is better for shaving and make-up. Some mirrors switch between the two. Decide by what the mirror is mostly used for.

Front-lit or back-lit. A front-lit strip throws light onto the face, which is the practical choice. A back-lit halo glows on the wall behind and looks good but lights the face less. Many mirrors do both.

Storage or not. A plain lit mirror is thinner and cheaper; a lit mirror cabinet hides bottles behind the glass. If the basin has no cabinet under it, the storage version earns its depth. Compare with the unlit mirror cabinets and mirrors.

Extras that matter in Malaysia. A demister pad stops the glass fogging after a hot shower, and a touch switch on the glass means no separate wall switch.

Wiring, Position and Fitting

The power point goes behind the mirror. Mark the mirror's centre and size on the wall before the electrician runs the cable, so the outlet is hidden and the cable is not stretched. This happens before tiling.

Keep it out of the shower spray. An LED mirror is made for a humid room, not for direct water. In a wet bathroom without a screen, position it on the dry wall over the basin and check its rating for damp locations.

Height follows the basin and the tap. The bottom edge should clear the tap, and the centre should sit at eye level for the tallest regular user. Sketch it with the basin cabinet height before fixing.

Sealed driver, ventilated room. Heat and humidity shorten the life of any electronics. A mirror whose driver is sealed lasts longer in a bathroom with no window; a small extractor helps everything in the room. The rest of the bathroom furniture follows the same damp rules.

Common questions

What is an LED mirror?

A bathroom mirror with LED strips built into or behind the glass, powered from a hidden point on the wall. It lights the face for shaving and make-up better than a ceiling light, and some models add a demister and a touch switch.

Does an LED mirror need a power point?

Yes. The mirror is wired to a power point hidden behind it, so the point has to be placed before the wall is tiled. If the bathroom is already finished, a surface cable can be run but it will be visible.

Warm or cool light for a bathroom mirror?

Cool or daylight white shows skin tone accurately for shaving and make-up; warm white is softer for an evening bathroom. If the mirror will do both jobs, choose one that switches between the two.

Is an LED mirror safe in a wet bathroom?

On the dry wall over the basin, yes; that is what it is made for. It should not sit inside the shower spray. Check the mirror's rating for damp locations and have the wiring done by an electrician.

Can I get an LED mirror with storage?

Yes, an LED mirror cabinet has the lit glass on the doors and shelves behind it. It is deeper than a plain mirror, so check that the doors clear the basin tap when open.

Tell the electrician the mirror size and centre before the first fix; a power point in the wrong place is the most common LED mirror problem.
