The three have to be chosen together, because the sink sets the cut-out, the cut-out limits which taps will sit properly, and the cabinet underneath decides what will physically fit at all. Specifying a Kitchen Sink and Tap

The order you decide things in matters more than the brand. Get the sink and the cabinet right and everything after it becomes easy.

What Is In Here, and What to Choose First

1. The sink. It is the constraint everything else works around, so it goes first. Our kitchen sinks come in single and double bowl, and the choice is mostly about how you actually wash up: a double bowl separates soaking from rinsing, a single bowl takes a large pot. Measure the cabinet it will sit in before you fall in love with a size.

2. The tap. Once the sink is fixed, the kitchen faucet has to match its tap hole and its deck. A pull-out spray needs clearance behind, and a tall spout over a shallow bowl splashes. Check the reach against the middle of the bowl, not the edge.

3. Everything else. Kitchen accessories and wall-mounted fittings go last, once the sink and tap are in and you can see what space is left.

Fitting It Into a Malaysian Kitchen

Measure the cabinet, not the gap. A sink is specified by its cut-out, and the cut-out has to leave enough material on every side of the cabinet top. The usual mistake is measuring the opening and ordering to that.

Top-mount or undermount. A top-mount sink drops in and its rim sits on the surface, which is the forgiving option and works on almost any worktop. An undermount sits below and gives a clean wipe-through edge, but the worktop has to be a material that can carry it and the edge has to be finished properly. Decide before the worktop is cut.

Water pressure decides the tap. Plenty of older units and landed homes here run on gravity feed, and a pull-out spray or an aerated spout can feel weak on it. If the kitchen tap dribbles, the fitting is usually not the problem. A booster pump is the normal fix.

Plan the waste before the cabinet goes in. The trap and the bottle waste sit inside the sink cabinet, and a double bowl needs more room down there than people expect. If a water filter or a disposal unit is going in too, that space has to be found now, not later.

Ventilation and the wall behind. Whatever goes on the wall behind the sink takes daily splashing, so keep the glossier finishes for there and the grippier ones on the floor.

Common questions

Single bowl or double bowl?

A double bowl separates washing from rinsing and suits a household that cooks daily. A single bowl gives you one large space, which is easier for big pots and trays. The cabinet width usually settles it: a double bowl in too narrow a cabinet leaves two bowls that are both too small to use.

What size sink fits my cabinet?

Work from the cabinet width and subtract enough on each side for the worktop to hold together. Then check the depth against the cabinet, and remember the trap has to fit underneath. Bring the cabinet dimensions rather than the size of the hole you are hoping to fill.

Top-mount or undermount?

Top-mount is the forgiving choice: it drops in, the rim covers the cut, and it works with almost any worktop. Undermount gives a cleaner edge to wipe crumbs into but needs a worktop material that can support it and a properly finished cut. That decision has to be made before the worktop is fabricated.

Why is my kitchen tap weak?

Usually water pressure rather than the tap. Gravity-fed supplies in older units and landed houses often cannot drive an aerated spout or a pull-out spray properly. A booster pump is the standard fix, and it is worth checking the supply before blaming the fitting.

Do I choose the sink or the tap first?

The sink. It sets the cut-out and the tap hole, and it is the piece the cabinet has to accommodate. A tap can almost always be matched to a sink; a sink cannot always be matched to a tap you have already bought.
