Ceramic tiles are chosen for cost and choice. The finish is what decides whether they belong on your floor or only on your wall.

What Ceramic Tiles Give You

Ceramic tiles show up in a lot of Malaysian homes and shops for a simple reason: they are affordable, they last, and they ask for very little. Most of the time a quick mop is enough.

Where ceramic differs from porcelain is density. Porcelain is fired harder and absorbs less water, which is what makes it the better answer for a busy floor or a wet area. Ceramic is the sensible pick for walls, bedrooms, and floors that do not take heavy traffic, and it costs less to cover the same area.

The Three Finishes, and Where Each Belongs

Glazed. A smooth, shiny surface that is easy to clean and water resistant, in the widest range of colours and patterns. It reflects light and brightens a room. It is also slippery once wet, so keep it for dry areas: living rooms, bedrooms, and walls.

Matt. Soft and non-reflective, with better grip and fewer visible fingerprints and dust marks. This is the one for kitchens and bathrooms, and for any floor walked on with wet feet.

Textured. Stone-look and timber-look surfaces with real profile to them. The grip is the point, so this is the choice for wet and high-traffic areas. It holds dirt more readily, so it wants a brush rather than a mop in the worst spots.

Whichever you pick, buy the whole job in one batch. Shade varies between production runs, and the tiles adhesive and grout should be chosen at the same time.

How long do ceramic tiles last?

A properly laid ceramic floor lasts decades. What fails first is almost never the tile: it is the grout, or the adhesive underneath if the wrong grade was used. Keep the grout clean and sealed and the floor will outlast most other finishes in the house.

What is the best cleaning solution for ceramic tile floors?

Warm water and a neutral pH floor cleaner. Wring the mop out properly, because standing water dries into a film that dulls the surface. Avoid abrasive powders and steel wool, and keep acidic cleaners off cement-based grout.

How do you make ceramic tile shine again?

A dull glazed tile is usually coated in cleaner residue rather than worn. Mop with plain warm water two or three times to strip the film, then dry it off. If the glaze itself is scratched, polishing will not bring it back, which is the argument for matt in busy rooms.

What is the texture of ceramic tiles?

It depends on the finish. Glazed is smooth and slightly reflective, matt is smooth but flat, and textured has a deliberate surface profile you can feel. Texture is what provides grip, so it is the property to check for any floor that gets wet.

Which brand of ceramic tile is best?

Brand matters less than matching the tile to the room. Get the finish and the water absorption right for where it is going, buy enough in one batch, and use the correct adhesive. A well-specified mid-range tile outlasts a premium one laid on the wrong grade of adhesive.
