What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain?

Porcelain is fired denser and absorbs far less water, which makes it the better choice for wet areas and busy floors. Ceramic costs less to cover the same area and is the sensible pick for walls, bedrooms and rooms that do not take heavy traffic.

Which tiles are best for a bathroom floor?

A matt or textured finish with low water absorption. The floor is wet every day and a polished surface with soap on it is slippery whatever it is made of. Save the gloss for the walls, where nobody stands on it.

What size tile should I use?

Larger formats give fewer grout lines and a calmer, more continuous floor, which is why they suit open-plan areas. They also telegraph every dip in the screed. If the floor is not flat, either level it properly or use a smaller format that can absorb the variation.

How much extra should I order?

Enough for cuts and wastage, plus a box put aside for repairs. Buy the whole job in one batch, because shade and calibration vary between production runs and matching a discontinued shade in three years is not realistic.

Can I see the tiles before ordering?

Yes, and it is worth doing. Colour on a screen is never exact, and the same tile reads differently depending on the lighting and the wall colour in the room. Our showroom is in Sungai Buloh and is open Monday to Saturday. Lay a few side by side before you commit.
