Glazed Porcelain Tiles: How to Choose
Everything you can see on glazed porcelain tiles lives in the glaze. That is both the reason to choose them and the thing to check before you put them on a floor.
What the Glaze Actually Does
A porcelain tile is fired from refined clay at high temperature until the body is dense and absorbs almost no water. Glazing adds a layer of coloured, fired glass on top of that body.
The practical consequence is that the glaze carries everything you can see. The pattern, the colour and the finish all live in that layer, and the body underneath is usually a different colour. So if the surface chips, the chip shows. On a full-body or homogeneous tile the colour runs all the way through, and a chip is far less obvious. That single difference is the main reason to choose one over the other, not price.
In return, the glaze gives you design range that a full-body tile cannot: convincing marble and timber prints, deep colours, and matt surfaces that a body-coloured tile cannot easily produce.
The glaze also decides how glazed porcelain tiles wear. It is a surface layer, and a surface layer can be abraded. That is what an abrasion or wear rating describes, and it is the number to ask for when the tile is going on a floor rather than a wall. A tile that looks perfect on a feature wall can look scuffed after two years in a hallway.
Where Glazed Porcelain Tiles Work, Sizes and Laying
Walls are the easiest case for glazed porcelain tiles. Nobody walks on a wall, so the wear rating hardly matters and you can use the glossiest tile in the range.
Dry indoor floors are the main use: living areas, bedrooms, corridors. Check the wear rating against the traffic and be honest about how busy the space really is.
Wet floors need more care. In a Malaysian wet bathroom the floor is soaked daily, and a gloss glaze with soap on it is slippery. Use a matt or textured finish on wet floors and keep gloss for the walls. Slip performance has its own rating, so ask for it rather than judging by eye.
Outdoors is a separate question. Sun, rain and thermal movement change what the tile has to do, and not every glazed tile is intended for it.
On sizes, larger formats mean fewer grout lines and a calmer floor, but they are less forgiving of an uneven screed. A big tile telegraphs every dip. If the substrate is not flat, either level it first or drop to a smaller format.
Buy the whole job in one batch. Shade and calibration vary between production runs, so an extra box bought later may not match. Allow a margin for cuts and keep a few spares, and pick the tile adhesive and grout at the same time.
Common questions
What are glazed porcelain tiles?
Glazed porcelain tiles are porcelain tiles with a fired glass layer on the surface. The body underneath is dense and absorbs almost no water, while the glaze carries the colour, the pattern and the finish. Unglazed or full-body porcelain has no such layer, so its colour runs right through the tile.
What is the difference between glazed porcelain tiles and homogeneous tiles?
Homogeneous tiles are full-body: the colour goes all the way through, so chips and scuffs barely show, which suits heavy traffic. Glazed porcelain tiles carry their pattern in a surface layer, which gives far more design choice but means a chip exposes a different colour underneath. Choose by traffic first, then by look.
Can you mop porcelain tiles?
Yes. Warm water and a neutral pH floor cleaner is all a glazed porcelain floor needs. Wring the mop out properly, because standing water dries into a film that dulls the surface. Avoid abrasive powders and steel wool: they scratch the glaze, and a scratched glaze cannot be polished back.
Does vinegar damage porcelain tile?
Vinegar will not usually harm the glazed surface itself, but repeated use attacks cement-based grout and any natural stone trim beside it. Since the grout is the weak point in a bathroom floor, use a neutral cleaner for routine mopping and keep vinegar for the occasional stubborn mark.
Can you lay outdoor porcelain tiles on concrete?
Usually yes, provided the concrete is sound and clean and falls away from the building for drainage, and provided the tile is intended for outdoor use. The adhesive has to be rated for exterior conditions and movement joints have to be respected. Do not assume an indoor glazed tile will do outdoors.
What else should I look at?
If the floor takes heavy traffic, compare these against homogeneous full body tiles. For a high-gloss finish, see nano polished tiles, and for wall work our ceramic tiles.
